The NHF signs letter calling for an increase in benefits in line with inflation

The NHF has signed a letter with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and other organisations committed to ending poverty, urging Prime Minister Sunak to honour his promise this spring to increase benefits in line with inflation. As charities warn that families will struggle to pay their rent and feed their children during the winter months, the letter urges the Prime Minister to make this change as soon as possible.

In the letter, the organisations stressed that low-income households need stability and certainty to afford essentials, pay rent, and keep food on the table. With debt, foodbank use and homelessness all increasing, bringing forward the usual uprating of benefits using the recent inflation rate would help the families who need it most.

In the face of economic uncertainty, households need reassurance, and the government needs to consider this position as a matter of urgency.
