With digital skills becoming increasingly vital as part of
everyday life, a recent report has revealed that 4.1 million of the
8.7 million adults who have never been online are in social
housing.
The Federation recently attended a Digital Summit, hosted
jointly by housing minister Grant Shapps and digital champion,
Martha Lane Fox, which discussed how the housing sector can work
together to help tenants get access to the online world.
Following the summit, a joint letter signed by David Orr, has been
sent out to all housing providers to raise awareness and encourage
sign-up to Race Online 2012. In addition the letter outlined
a commitment to look at how Government and national bodies can
facilitate and drive forward opportunities for online access.
If you’re interested in finding out more about how you can help
your tenants get online, you can join Race Online 2012 where you
can access lots of resources, sign up as a partner and encourage
people in your area to become a digital champion as
part of the ‘Go On, Give an hour’ campaign.
In addition the report ‘Digital by Default’ is now available to
download and it includes case studies of how housing
associations are working to provide their tenants with online
access and gives many examples of engaging digital inclusion
projects.
The report was produced by Housing Technology, with Race Online 2012 and sponsored by Family Mosaic,
RCT Homes and Richmond Housing.
