Leadership for Housing

Leadership for Housing is one of a series of initiatives led by the Federation to improve the diversity of housing associations' leadership. The initiatives encompass all diversity issues, and are supported by a range of organisations.

In the 21st century, housing associations' leadership should mirror its customer base, attract the best staff and reflect a wide range of skills to deliver the Federation's campaign 'iN business for neighbourhoods'.

To recruit a skilled and diverse pool of leaders for the 21st century, we need to invest in a range of programmes to help new leaders (particularly those who have had fewer opportunities for training), and new styles of recruitment and assessment to ensure that a range of leadership styles are valued.

The Leadership for Housing programme is now in its fourth year – applications open

The programme, run by Lancaster University for directors and senior managers in the housing sector, has been running since March 2009.

Previous participants have noted on its usefulness in their feedback:

"The 'Leadership for Housing' programme offered a variety of learning environments. The programme of modules gave us access to a number of experts in related fields, and encouraged us to apply different theories at work. The coaching gave us space to talk through issues directly affecting us at work on a one to one basis, and talk through strategies for managing these differently in the future. The action learning sets provided us with a support mechanism, and an arena for sounding out new ideas and gaining new perspectives. Combined, these helped me to make lasting changes at work, that affect my own personal development, my team, my organisation, and hopefully, the sector.'
Claire Howe, Head of Marketing, Circle Anglia

'The Leadership for Housing' course was an excellent experience. Through traditional and experiential methods, I learnt to recognise and develop my strengths and improve areas of weakness. I have carried much of my learning into the workplace and I feel confident and able to approach the greater challenges ahead.'
Simon Cavanagh, Regeneration Project Manager, Sanctuary Housing
