Clarification of Approved Document B consultation

07 October 2018

We have responded to the government’s consultation on the clarification of Approved Document B (ADB) of the Building Regulations.

As part of its policy response to the fire at Grenfell Tower, the government has consulted on proposed changes to ADB of the Building Regulations, aiming to improve usability and reduce the risk of misinterpretation.

The Federation has consulted with members to make a submission to the consultation. Our response states that:

  • We are in broad agreement with the proposed changes made to the ABD
  • The government could provide further clarity by allowing open access to the British Standards referred to in the ADB
  • The government could consider providing further clarity by producing separate and specific fire safety guidance for types of supported accommodation.

The Government has committed to a wider technical review of the Building Regulations, with details due to be published later in the autumn.
