The UK’s 21 million homes are responsible for 27% of the CO2 emissions in the country. Housing associations own and manage more than two million homes in England so our sector has a key role to play in addressing environmental sustainability.
Housing association homes are already built to high environmental standards, but we are concerned that many private developers are still being allowed to build homes with little emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
With homes already built set to make up around 70 per cent of the total housing stock in 2050 however, we also recognise the need for better energy efficiency in existing homes.

There are a variety of funding opportunities for members available to assist them with improving the environmental standards of their stock. These include Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) funding from the energy companies and one-off funding proposals.
The Federation has built strong links with European providers, via David Orr's Presidency of CECODHAS, the European Liaison Committee for Social Housing.
The Federation are delivery partners in a €1.5m Intelligent Energy Europe funded project 'Powerhouse' to share knowledge and promote expertise around building and retrofitting to greener standards. The outcomes of this project will provide housing associations with a wealth of information, knowledge and tools to assist in retrofitting that are readily accessible.
