National Housing Federation statement on Montague report

Response to Montague report to boost the private rented sector.

Responding to the Montague report to boost the private rented sector, National Housing Federation chief executive David Orr says:

“We absolutely support the Montague report’s call for reform of, and more investment in, private (market) rented housing. It will be a crucial part of the solution to help tackle the country’s desperate housing shortage.

“For generations housing demand has outstripped supply, putting pressure on prices. Market rents have become more and more costly and, with home ownership continuing to be out of reach for millions, it is putting huge financial pressure on the hard working families who have to rent.

“Housing associations already own and manage thousands of homes for private market rent and want to do more. They have the business expertise and skills at property management to help attract more investment.

“That said it is important to plan positively for housing growth which meets the needs of the whole local community. With 1.8 million households on housing waiting lists, the delivery of market rented homes shouldn’t be at the expense of affordable homes.”
