NHF signs joint letter calling on greater support for low-income families

26 October 2022

The NHF joined over 20 other organisations from across the social housing sector in signing a letter to the Prime Minister calling for urgent support to help low-income families facing soaring energy bills amid the cost-of-living crisis.

The letter, organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), stressed the impact of rising living costs which are placing families in difficult positions of having to choose between heating their home and affording essentials. Although social housing landlords are supporting their residents in a number of ways, including fuel and food vouchers, the letter called for more urgent support to address the scale of the challenge.

In the letter, the social housing sector called for the government to:

  • Restore local housing allowance rates.
  • To commit to additional funding for energy-efficiency measures in homes.
  • To bring forward the planned benefit increase from next April to October.
  • Remove the benefit cap and two-child limit.
  • Limit universal credit deductions for prior overpayments.
