Laying the foundations: a housing strategy for England

Download our member briefing following the Government's new housing strategy announced on 21 November.

24 November 2011

The Government’s new housing strategy was jointly announced by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister on Monday 21 November 2011. It aims to tackle the housing shortage, boost the economy, create jobs and give people the opportunity to get onto the housing ladder.

The Federation welcomes the Government’s recognition of the huge economic and social value that housing investment brings. However, we believe the Government needs to be bolder, go further to fix the broken housing market and take the decisive actions needed to radically increase housing supply.

The key measures to note include:

  • A new build indemnity scheme for up to 100,000 households
  • £400m fund to provide development finance for firms with stalled sites
  • More regulation for housing associations on value for money
  • Growing the private rented sector and build to rent schemes
  • £50m extra funding to bring empty homes back into use
  • A 'new deal for older people's housing'
  • Creation of a network of neighbourhood designers.

This briefing explains the most important Government announcements presented within the Housing Strategy. It also sets out the Federation’s views on these announcements.
