The Chancellor’s red briefcase will making another appearance on 16 March for the 2016 Budget. Following on swiftly from the Comprehensive Spending Review, this set piece event is the chance for the Government to set out its plans for the economy over the next twelve months.

The Government sought views on what should be included in the Budget and invited representations by 29 January. The Federation made a submission to the process focusing on policy solutions to support housing associations in three key areas:
- protecting housing for the country’s most vulnerable people
- guaranteeing housing associations’ independence
- driving supply.
Crucially, we have used the submission to raise the sector’s grave concerns about how the proposed cap to Housing Benefit at Local Housing Allowance (LHA) levels could damage supported housing; press for access to the land you need, at a fair price, to deliver the development ambitions the sector shares with the Government; and ask for the rent flexibilities that will allow you to use your assets as effectively as possible.
