Our housing priorities for the New Year

Happy New Year from the team at the Federation. It will be a busy start to the year, with major housing policy taking shape against an increasingly uncertain backdrop.

Despite the political and economic uncertainty, I’m feeling optimistic about the year ahead. My first member visit of 2019 – to a mixed-use homeless hostel that offers not just shelter but training, arts and wellbeing spaces – really brought home to me how valuable and unique the housing association offer is.

It was a reminder of the creativity and thoughtfulness I’ve seen everywhere I go when I visit our members. It’s just these qualities that will help us keep delivering for our communities even if the external environment is tough.

Of course, while the housing association sector can keep delivering even when others can’t, we can only do that with the right support. This will be a key part of our conversations with the Government in 2019 as we prepare for the Comprehensive Spending Review expected later this year.

We’re also focusing on the immediate priorities for housing – including building safety, our Offer for Tenants and housing supply – and working with members to shape them.

Member engagement events will be taking place around the country on all these themes and more, with some key dates already in the diary:

We’re also exploring the next steps for our Great Places work, with events in Nottingham on 5 February, York on 7 February and Manchester on 15 February.

And we’ll be working closely with groups of members such as smaller housing associations, rural providers, specialists, BME associations, associations in devolution areas, shared ownership providers and board members on some specific offers.

There’s a lot going on, and we’re always keen to hear from members about the key issues affecting them, so do get in touch. I’m looking forward to seeing many more members in the coming months, and to working with you all over the year ahead.
