Affordable home ownership

As well as providing rented homes that people on low incomes can afford, housing associations also offer a range of homes for people priced out of traditional home ownership.

Housing associations are not-for-profit providers of social and affordable housing. Any additional funds raised through the sale of homes is reinvested into delivering their social purpose, such as building new affordable housing or delivering community services.

Here, you can find out more about the affordable home ownership products that are either provided by housing associations already or being developed by the government.

Other affordable home ownership products

First Homes is another affordable home ownership product which tends to be delivered by developers rather than housing associations.

Rent to Buy helps residents in England save for a deposit to buy a home by offering properties at a discounted rate – this is normally 20% below market rent. Organisations must be Registered Providers with the Regulator of Social Housing to own and/or manage Rent to Buy homes. The registered provider will receive grant funding to cover the level of discount provided to the resident.
