Our new brownfield land map helps to break down barriers to building new homes

Finding available land to build new homes on isn’t always straightforward. We’ve developed a new digital resource to help make it easier.

One of the barriers to building homes is sourcing suitable, available, affordable land in the right areas. Looking at brownfield land is a good place to start but even then it’s not always easy to locate where it exists and where the most appropriate new sites are to suit your organisation’s development programmes.

This is why we have collated and mapped all individual brownfield registers that local authorities in England have been required to publish since 2017. Collating more than 300 registers with almost 18,000 brownfield sites into a coherent format is not an easy task, especially since each site needs to have the right coordinate (and coordinate system) in order to appear in the right location on the map. Altogether, we were able to map 95% of all sites published in all available brownfield registers in England.

This is the first time that all brownfield sites have been made accessible in one place – that is, in one digital resource. It’s easy to see at a glance where the sites are located, and the data can be filtered by the planning and ownership status of each site. The map also summarises key information such as the number of sites and the number of potential homes that could be built on these sites. You can add layers such as constituencies, combined authorities, regions and local authorities and get information about the development potential on brownfield sites within these areas.

We’re hoping that this map will be a useful resource for housing associations to identify new sites for building more homes but also for anyone interested in planning and housing.
