The Government has announced a new consultation, proposing sprinklers as a standard in all new high-rise homes, and has confirmed next steps for the Building a Safer Future consultation.

The new consultation, announced today by the Secretary of State for for Housing, Communities and Local Government, also includes proposals to improve wayfinding signage within blocks of flats, and to install evacuation alert systems for use by fire and rescue services. The Secretary of State made further building safety announcements, including:
- Confirmation that the Government will respond to the Building a Safer Future consultation by end of year. This consultation proposed a fundamental reform of the building regulatory system, for which we submitted a comprehensive, sector-wide response.
- Publication of responses to the review of Approved Document B. This will inform a technical review of building regulations guidance. You can read the new analysis on the Government’s website, and further information on Approved Document B can be found in the building safety section of our website.
- Establishing a new protection board in order to manage and record risks regarding inspection activity.
- Providing £10m a year to local authorities to improve and support inspection capabilities.
