Government consultation on changes to the Mental Health Act

19 January 2021

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) is inviting submissions to a consultation on proposed changes to the Mental Health Act (MHA) that aim to help put patients at the centre of decisions about their own care.

This consultation is of particular relevance to housing associations providing supported housing as it covers:

  • Changes to the detention under the MHA of people who have Learning Disabilities or autism.
  • Greater choice for patients.
  • Improving support for people who are detained, community treatment orders (CTOs).
  • The interface between the MHA and the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Children and young people.
  • The experiences of ethnic minority communities.
  • Improving policy and practice.

The consultation closes at 11:59pm on 21 April 2021. You can submit a response here.

We are also aware of increasing pressures on supported housing workers to provide mental health crisis support during the pandemic. Please get in touch with us if this is your experience.
