Government seeking views on the case for community batteries in the UK

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) is gathering information on the community batteries landscape: the opportunities and benefits, the barriers to delivery and how safety can be ensured. The call for evidence also publicises UK and international community battery case studies.

The government wants to understand whether batteries could and should be scaled up to provide benefits beyond individual users to whole communities, including those that cannot be reached by domestic batteries, for both technical reasons (i.e. those living in flats) or financial reasons (e.g. low-income households).

Housing associations are a particularly important audience for this: community batteries could play a valuable role in extending the benefits of storage to tenants and residents who can't currently access domestic batteries, and DESNZ is keen to understand both the opportunities and the practical barriers.
