A history of BME Housing in Britain (webinar)

04 November 2020

BME housing associations play a crucial role in providing quality housing for tenants of all backgrounds, but their work goes far beyond housing and includes advocating for anti-racism and inclusion, acting as vehicles for neighbourhood regeneration and community cohesion.

BME housing associations are activist organisations, many of whom were created in response to the lack of quality housing available to black and minority ethnic (BME) communities in the 1980’s. In this webinar, we will learn about the history of BME housing associations, including the race riots and complex political challenges that these incredible organisations were created to address.

During this webinar you will learn:
• Why BME housing associations were created
• The challenges that face BME communities and the unique role that BME housing associations play in addressing these
• How BME housing associations have adapted and evolved over time
• The incredible achievements that have been made by BME housing associations over the decades

Speakers include Abdul Ravat, Head of Development & Relationships, Abbeyfield and Vice Chair of Manningham HA and Ben Laryea, Chief Executive of Ekaya HA and Chair of BME London.
