How many homes did housing associations build in quarter three 2019/20?

This briefing details the number of homes housing associations developed in the third quarter of 2019/20, plus numbers delivered in the twelve months to December 2019.

The key findings are:

In the 12 months ending December 2019:

  • Housing associations completed a total of 45,700 homes, up 1% on 2018.
  • 38,500 of these were affordable homes, the same as in 2018.
  • 45% (20,700) of homes completed were delivered outside the Affordable Homes Programme.
  • 56% (21,400) of affordable completions were delivered through Section 106 agreements in 2019.
  • Housing associations also started to build 55,300 homes in 2019, up 20% on 2018.
  • 46,500 of these were affordable homes, up 19% on 2018.
  • 42% (23,500) of all homes started will be delivered outside the Affordable Homes Programme.
  • 48% (22,200) of affordable starts were delivered through Section 106 agreements in 2019.

In quarter three 2019/20:

  • Housing associations completed 11,600 homes, a decrease of 2% on the same quarter last year.
  • 9,900 of these were affordable homes, a decrease of 1% on the same quarter last year.
  • Housing associations started to build a total of 15,700 homes, an increase of 36% on the same quarter last year.
  • 13,200 of these were affordable homes, an increase of 27% on the same quarter last year.
  • 50% (6,700) of affordable starts were delivered through Section 106 agreements.
