Making every contact count in Tameside - New Charter Housing

New Charter Housing staff are being trained to offer brief health advice to residents.

New Charter Housing is supporting its local health and wellbeing board, by training staff in Making Every Contact Counts (MECC) techniques for delivering health advice and supporting people to make positive lifestyle change.

The programme complements New Charter's existing work to address health inequalities (providing decent, affordable housing and investing in care services that support people through the course of their lives).

Two members of staff have received training for trainers from the Health Development Consultancy and are delivering an in-house course with resources supplied by the local public health team.

The sessions promote the benefits of healthy living and equip staff to support customers. They look at key public health messages and behaviour change psychology, and explore how to broach conversations with customers about change.

Evaluation has shown that staff have made changes to their own behaviour as a result of the insight they have received into health statistics and the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
