Get ready for Flood Action Week: 13-19 October 2025

Charlotte Rogers, 17 September 2025

Flood Action Week 2025 is coming up on 13-19 October. Sign up to our webinar to learn more about flood risk and how we can improve the sector’s flood readiness.

Flood Action Week was launched by the Environment Agency as an annual campaign to raise awareness of the risk of flooding and the steps that can be taken to prepare. This year it is taking place on 13-19 October. The campaign encourages individuals and communities to assess their long-term flood risk, sign up for flood warnings and consider taking protective action.

As climate change increases the risk of flooding, it is more important than ever to cast a spotlight on the issue and share best practices. The new National Flood Risk Assessment found that around 6.3 million properties in England are currently at risk of flooding, with that figure likely to increase to eight million by 2050 (roughly one in four properties). With a rising risk of surface water flooding, urban areas and previously unaffected regions will be increasingly impacted. Unsurprisingly, flooding takes a huge financial and emotional toll. The average cost of flooding to a home is £30,000 and it takes an average of five months for people to return home following repair works.

Flood Ready Taskforce

In January 2025, the Environment Agency commissioned a Flood Ready Taskforce to produce an independent review into property flood resilience, aimed at improving the flood readiness of our built environment. The NHF sits on the leadership group of this taskforce, contributing to the final review and working with other key stakeholders to create an action plan for the group to take forward. The final review will be published during Flood Action Week, to bolster the campaign and encourage action.

NHF and flood resilience

This Flood Action Week, we are joining the annual campaign to raise awareness of flood risk and resilience. We know that our members are already taking important action to address flood risk, including conducting climate risk assessments, providing resident support, developing business continuity plans and implementing measures to improve property flood resilience. However, there is still a long way to go in developing the flood readiness of the sector.

At our Flood Action Week webinar (15 October, 14:00-15:00), we will be sharing insights from our work on the taskforce and providing further detail on the scale of the risk to our sector. We will also be sharing case studies and best practice, to highlight what our members are doing right and provide blueprints for others to take action. The webinar is free to attend for NHF members but please register in advance.

In the lead up to Flood Action Week, why not also familiarise yourself with our Flooding Toolkit, designed to help our members prepare for flooding and manage in the event of a flood.
