Our letter to the Secretary of State on ensuring quality in social housing

23 November 2022

The inquest following the tragic death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak has issued a verdict concluding that the toddler died as a result of a severe respiratory condition caused due to prolonged exposure to mould in his home environment. Awaab and his family lived in a housing association home.

Michael Gove, Secretary of State and the Regulator of Social Housing have both written to social housing providers noting actions they expect landlords to take to respond to this tragedy. The National Housing Federation is committed to making sure our members understand and act upon the critical lessons from Awaab’s death to ensure they can never be repeated.

We have issued a press statement and written a letter responding to the Secretary of State on ensuring quality in social housing.
