Our Spending Review submission to end the housing crisis

The next Spending Review is our chance to make a transformational investment in people, in homes and in our communities to end the housing crisis.

25 June 2019

England needs 145,000 new affordable homes a year, including 90,000 for social rent. The Federation is presenting new modelling setting out for the first time what investment is needed to build these homes. On top of the lack of affordable homes there are also communities around the country in need of regeneration and new opportunities. People need proper support, through an improved welfare system and secure supported housing to thrive, and we need to invest in safe, secure homes. We want to see the Government invest in this.

Over the last few months, we’ve been working with our members to ensure we’re focusing on the issues that matter most. The Federation is now making a public call for transformative investment that finally tackles the roots of the housing crisis:

Invest in building the homes our country needs

Our new modelling shows that the Government must invest £12.8bn a year in real terms, for 10 years, to kick start national housebuilding and build the homes this country needs. You can download our grant modelling report here.

Invest in places to bring the country back together

We’re calling for a new, £10bn national regeneration fund over 10 years so they can work with local partners to deliver this.

Invest in the support to enable people to thrive

We want to see an investment in improving Universal Credit, a fairer welfare system and introducing a national support budget to fund the support costs of supported housing.

Invest in safety

We’re calling for the Government to broaden the scope of the existing £400m Cladding Remediation Fund and create a Building Safety Fund to cover one-off vital costs of making homes safe and secure.
