Housing associations have statutory duties to ensure reasonable standards of health and safety. Some of these can be addressed as part of cyclical maintenance, including gas safety and servicing.
The Local Government Association (LGA) published a guide to fire safety in purpose-built blocks of flats in 2011.
DCLG and the Electrical Safety Council sponsored this guidance, and we were an active member of the project steering and reference groups. The guide was developed by Colin Todd Associates and project managed by Local Government Group (LGG).
This guidance helps people to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Housing Act 2004. As sector-led guidance it does not introduce any new standards or regulations, but clarifies several complex issues around risk assessment and fire safety management to ensure residents of these buildings get appropriate advice from their landlords on what to do in the event of a fire.
